Braunstone v Wigston 1 Match Result

Hi,
Played on Wednesday night at Braunstone:

1 Robinson, John 0-1 Byron, Alan
2 Bingham, Jim Drawn Dehnen, Walter
3 Sandrovitch, David 0-1 Burrows, Martin
4 Colburn, Paul Drawn Morley, Andy
5 Sainsbury, Mike Drawn Dodds, Iain
score: -------------1.5 - 3.5 ---------------

The board 1 game was interesting, but fairly comfortably won by Alan in the end. Walter, on board 2, was worse for some considerable part of this game and even ran short of time in the quick play finish. Jim was getting short of time too when Walter managed to win a pawn - this resulted in a temporary adrenaline rush with Walter declining the offer of a draw..... when he had 27 seconds left on his clock to Jim's 2.5 minutes. He soon realised there was no way he could win it - certainly not in 27 seconds (although he was down to 7 seconds by now). Fortunately Jim Bingham, being the gentleman he is, accepted Walter's draw offer when he might quite legitimately have opted to play on.

Martin was helped by Dave blundering on move 31 when he thought he was actually playing move 30 - and therefore played it v quickly to avoid losing on time! Without this miscalculation it could have been quite difficult for Martin.

On board 4, I had an interesting -ish game in which Paul got more play than I expected from the opening. I tried to unbalance it and open things up only to find that several of the tactics I had "in the air" didn't work, for various reasons. I had to bale out into a dead drawn opposite coloured bishops and rooks ending at which point we called a truce.
A quick draw on the bottom board - justified by the end position.
So, overall, it could have been closer........ but it wasn't!

Regards,
Andy.

Wigston 2 v Scraptoft Valley 1 match result

Hi, Neil,

Played tonight:

1 Horspool, Phil 180 Drawn 181 Edwards, Alan
2 Morley, Andy 173 Drawn 170 Graf, Roland
3 Watkinson, Phil 161 0-1 164 Burgess, Ray
4 Dodds, Iain 154 Drawn 162 Collins, RF (Bob)
5 Smith, Stephen 146 0-1 155 Tate, Mick
calculated score: ----1.5 - 3.5 ------------------

The second team were always going to struggle against the second best team in the Division. Phil and Andy did well to draw their respective games; I didn't put up much resistance against Ray Burgess. Iain never had anything more than a draw, and Stephen, on the bottom board, was struggling with a poor position and very short of time, and blundered a piece.

Overall, we lost 1.5 against 3.5 and probably this reflected the relative strengths of the teams.

Next match is in a fortnight's time, the return fixture at Scraptoft Valley.

Regards,
Phil.

Braunstone 2 v Wigston 3 Match result

Hi, Everyone,

Played last night at Braunstone:

1 Colburn, Paul J 157 1-0 161 Watkinson, Phil
2 Oliver, John 159 0-1 154 Dodds, Iain
3 Salisbury, Mike 159 1-0 150 Wells, Jeremy (Jez)
4 Robinson, Tony 139 1-0 141 Daniel, John
5 Young, Gavin 136 0-1 138 Turland, Pete
--------------------- 3-2 ------------------------

This turned out to be a close match - we had our chances but failed to take advantage of them.

We welcomed Jez Wells to the team with his new, shiny grade of 150 by pitting him against Mike Salisbury. The fact there is only 9 points between Mike and Jez, and that Mike, the strongest player in the room, was playing on Board 3 shows that it will be a couple of years before the new grading system is representative of player strength.

Braunstone's 2nd board did not appear, so John Oliver stepped in to make up their team.

Jez's game finished first; losing a bishop in complications and Mike converting the win in efficient fashion. Meanwhile, on the bottom board, Peter was a pawn down in a slightly worse position, but later managed to win a piece and then the game.

All square, then, and with Iain's and Paul's game looking drawish, the decider was going to be the top board game. Paul Colburn had done his homework for the game and opened with a sharp line in the f3 Benko. Mike, glancing over to the game, commented "Someone's had a new book for Christmas" (he had); John Daniel, obvoiusly bemused with the strange opening, replied "I can guarantee that our game won't look like that!".

The game was close, and very interesting, with my opponent gambitting 3 pawns in a typical Benko strategy to obtain two powerful bishops against my uncastled king. I missed two tactical opportunities to win the game, and lost.

Iain pressed on with his game, converting a drawn position in the endgame to a win, unfortunately John lost on Board 4 also in the endgame. So the match result followed the outcome of the top board, with the Braunstone winning 3-2.

The next match is on Wednesday 21st Jan, away at Market Harboro'.

Phil.
